Review of financial education provision undertaken by the Department for Work & Pensions

13. Every Child Matters: Change for Children in Schools (2004)
Guidance to schools particularly emphasising the ‘personalising’ of learning.

14. Solving the Pension Problem
Just published in October 2004 by the Pensions Commission, the Turner report provides options for dealing with the
pensions problem. Responses to the proposals are required by January 2005.

15. Jobs and Enterprise in Deprived Areas
Hot of the press – published September 2004. This publication from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Officer sets out what can be done to tackle the “concentrations of worklessness” that exist in parts of England. Some interesting research material here as analysis of worklessness has been undertaken on a street by street basis.

16. Building financial capability in the UK: the role of advice
Published in July 2004 by the FSA, this report builds upon the previous strategy documents from the FSA’s working groups looking at financial capability.

17. Gender Briefing
Published in April 2004 by the Women’s and Equality Unit, this publication provides the latest figures on female participation in economic activity. Did you know that 70% of women of working age are now in employment of some form compared with 78% of men?

18. Action on Debt: Why it matters and what you can do
Published by the Social Exclusion Unit in 2004, the pack provides an overview of debt in a range of social contexts and offers guidance on actions that can be taken at local level.

19. Building financial capability in the UK
The first report published by the FSA in 2004 from the financial capability working party. The report sets out the 7 project areas and the membership of its advisory groups.

20. Social Enterprise – A strategy for success
Published at the end of 2003 by the DTI, the report looks at the progress being made against the government’s strategy for the development of social enterprise. We have seen from our own increasing work in this field just how stimulating and challenging this sector is becoming.

21. Towards a national strategy for financial capability
Published in 2003 by FSA, the document sets out the FSA’s preliminary thinking in advance of the establishment of its working groups on financial capability. The document sets out what FSA sees as the problem and the beginnings of its strategy.

22. Financial Capability at Key Stages 3 & 4
Published in 2000 by DfES, this is the advisory criteria provided for schools in England for the introduction of personal finance education. The criteria in the download covers Key Stages 3 and 4.

23. Adult Financial Capability Framework
Published jointly in 2000 by the FSA and Basic Skills Agency. This is the advisory criteria for the development of financial capability in adults. The criteria is structured in a similar way to, and builds on that published by DfES for schools.

24. Enterprise and Social Exclusion
Published by the Treasury in 1999, this important report examined how enterprise could be used more in deprived communities to enable improved income and employment along with aiding the improvement of social indicators such as health and education. Many current initiatives have arisen as a direct result of the thesis contained in this publication.
